"Combining clays for a strung doll... where to start?"

I'd like to sculpt a doll body (and possibly make a mold from it later) with channels inside the armature to take wire or string - so it will be poseable. I know how to construct the joints, but I'm worried about stress and wear.

Here's my idea - brass tubing and wire for armature base, air-dry clay to "rough out" the body, polymer clay to finish... I want the translucence of polymer, which is why I don't want to use all air-dry clay.

Can anyone spot any terribly stupid part of this plan? Has anyone here ever done this? I would LOVE advice, unless it's a technique you'd like to keep exclusive..

Thank you in advance for any thoughts, hints, suggestions...
Ann Marie

Hi, I'm new here. I've been working on a sculpture using Katherine Dewey's book on sculpting animals. The only thing I note is that she suggests using only brass for the tubing and wires, because other metals can stain the clay eventually, she says. However, she does use crumpled aluminum foil for the core -- which might be a lot easier and lighter to use than air-dry clay. She lightly hammers it into shape.

As for durable clays, I've read that Promat is the strongest, but I haven't used it. You might Google "polymer clay puppet" and see if you find any forums, because puppet makers would be dealing with the same issues that you are.

Best regards,
Dot in Rockville

   *smacks forehead*

Thank you! I found all kinds of useful stuff at puppetry sites...

I just got Katherine Dewey's animal book and figure book - wow. They're not just polymer clay books - they're sculpting classes. It is so rare to find someone who not only has a gift for an art form but the gift of teaching effectively, too. The pictures are incredibly helpful and so clear.

You're welcome! I'm glad you found that helpful.

Katherine Dewey also has a sculptor's forum on her website at

http://www.elvenwork.com/

and she recommends what I found to be an awesome scupting tutorial by "Smellybugs," a professional sculptor who makes alien figures. He uses Sculpey with various armatures to build a two or three foot long alien animal in this long tutorial full of pictures.

You ARE a doll. That tutorial is incredible.

I went back and re-read some of the Katherine Dewey Figures book, and found a place where she suggested using epoxy putty for an extra-strong core for legs. I have some Magic Sculp and this will probably be what I try first - and after reading that tutorial, I want calipers. What an excellent idea.

Thank you again!
