"pre-baking portions of figurine"

   Hi,
I am back to making those apostles and other Biblical figurines for a Montessori school.

There is a problem with the poor apostles losing their heads. so to speak.

I had been baking the head and neck with toothpicks extending from the bottom of them. Then I would stick the head and neck into a cone-shaped base that makes up the body of the figurine. I have a new oven and my temps are much more reliable now, than when I first made these figurines. However, I am concerned that maybe I should only bake part of the face - I maul them too much if I don't pre-bake them - and not the whole head and neck.

Do I need to worry about over baking the faces if I leave more of the statuettes unbaked until the end of the project?

Thanks,I wish could remember the scoop on that.

Still seeking grace,
Denise

Hello,

The "flesh" colors will progressively deepen with sequential curings - this happens more with the Polyform clays than with Fimo or Kato clays.

If you just cure for 15 minutes with only the heads (or only the heads and hands) and then give them the full 30 minutes when the entire figure is assembled, it shouldn't be that noticeable.

Be very careful handling clay that's only partially cured, though - it's fragile.

Have fun!

   Thanks, Elizabeth.

A couple years off from doing these things and my brain just lost those cells, I guess.

Thanks again,
